The Future of Electric Vehicle Charging: Coventry’s Dynacov Project

Coventry's Dynacov Project

A groundbreaking initiative is underway in Coventry, England, aimed at transforming electric vehicle (EV) charging. Known as the Dynacov (“Dynamic Charging of Vehicles”) project, Coventry University is spearheading research into dynamic wireless charging using metal coils installed under the road surface. A sustainable option for buses and logistics vehicles, this ground-breaking technology from Electreon has the ability to charge electric vehicles (EVs) while they are in motion.

The Technology Behind Dynacov

The Dynacov project is centred around inductive charging technology, which allows vehicles to charge wirelessly as they drive over specially equipped road sections. The USA, China, Norway, Germany, Sweden, and France are just a few of the nations that have successfully adopted this technology that ElectReon successfully prototyped.

Collaborative Efforts for a Sustainable Future

The Dynacov project is part of a larger initiative involving multiple universities and a group of 27 Key Cities across England and Wales. These efforts are focused on finding innovative ways to achieve net-zero targets by collaborating with local communities. The National Grid Electricity Distribution-funded project demonstrates the potential for collaboration between academic institutions and local government in the pursuit of a sustainable future.

Positive Impact on Climate Change

Kevin Vincent, director of Coventry University’s Centre for Connected and Autonomous Automotive Research, highlighted the positive impact of Dynacov, stating that it demonstrates how collaboration between universities, local authorities, and industry stakeholders can lead to positive change. Councillor Jim O’Boyle of Coventry City Council echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role of innovation in tackling climate change and praising Coventry’s expertise in the transport sector.

The Dynacov project in Coventry represents a significant step forward in the development of sustainable transportation solutions. By leveraging dynamic wireless charging technology, this initiative has the potential to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and contribute to the fight against climate change.
